Up the Corrib... this is what it's all about.
Don't just look at it - get on it!

Fishing on Lough Corrib - Its world class!

Lough Corrib is a wild, unspoilt and ancient lake famed for its wild salmon and brown trout, but catching one is not  so easy. Oughterard is the premier angling centre on the lake where visitors can hire experienced boatmen and obtain all the necessary equipment for an exciting and safe fishing trip. We would suggest an absolute

minimum of half a day to experience a trip on the lake worthwhile.

We very strongly advise visitors who are new to the lake to use a professional guide to help make your trip

safe, exciting and memorable! Believe me, it will be worth it!

You may have heard stories about catching the huge ferox trout or even the huge greedy pike on Lough Corrib. However, catching one is yet another story, and you will need the expertise of a professional Gillie to do so.

Our local boat hire and ghillie Kevin Molloy is just a few minutes from us. Kevin is Highly recommended and he can provide all the necessary equipment and advice for your adventure on the lough.

Plan your trip well in advance and take advice from Kevin and you will have a memorable experience on

Lough Corrib.

Fascinating videos of expert Corrib Ghillies at work, particularly if your new to fishing.

SAFETY ON THE WATER:

Please take this good advice... not teaching anyone here, just sound advice!

  1. ALWAYS check the inland lakes weather for Lough Corrib (Upper) before venturing out..

  2. ALWAYS carry one or more fully charged means of communication.

  3. ALWAYS ensure everyone on the boat is wearing a life jacket - it's the law!

  4. ALWAYS carry enough extra fuel to get you home

  5. ALWAYS bring extra warm and water resistant clothing

  6. ALWAYS bring sun glasses, a hat, sunscreen and chapstick

  7. ALWAYS bring midge repellent

  8. ALWAYS bring drinks and snacks

  9. ALWAYS carry a 1st Aid Kit

  10. ALWAYS carry a basic tool kit

  11. ALWAYA carry a tow rope

  12. ALWAYS tell someone where you are going and your approximate return time and then let them know your back!

  13. Know your limits and those of your boat

It's all about the wind & weather: and Beaufort Scale:

  1. Light Winds (1-14 knots): Ideal for leisure and learning.

  2. Moderate Winds (15-19 knots): Requires skillful handling and constant vigilance.

  3. Strong Winds (20+ knots): Increase in risks, review the possibility of a small craft advisory.

Very strong winds can blow up, predominantly from the SW to W, and can create dangerous high waves. They can easily swamp a boat, or cause it to broach if following the boat. ALWAYS check the inland lakes weather forecast for Lough Corrib before venturing onto the lake. Know your boat's limits. Get a copy of The Corrib Chart Book from any good book shop.

Shallows and Rocks:  Unless the weather is bright these are very hard to spot. They are sharp, dangerous and unforgiving. Just because it looks like open water - doesn't mean it is. A SAFE SPEED is essential,

and a GOOD LOOKOUT is a must.

NOW you are ready to go out, enjoy and be amazed by this incredible place.
